Project Overview

The catalog’s purpose was to announce a new shoe collection called ‘Mother Gaia Collection’ set to be released fall of 2020. I conducted research on the company and the products it distributes, as well as, their target audience. Cult Gaia is a high fashion and accessories brand based in Los Angeles, California. Many celebrities have been spotted wearing their creations and their collections are seen in notable fashion shows. I chose to focus on Cult Gaia’s shoes due to the unique shapes and structures that make them stand out. I was inspired most by the rounded heels. 

Cover Sketches & Development

Below are the sketches I went through to get the final cover that is shown at the top of this page in a mockup. I was inspired by the shapes of the heels and decided to make that the visual theme throughout. My covers explore the different ideas I had for representing the heels. I started with about 30 cover sketches and narrowed it down to 15 and then narrowing it down again to the top 3 directions.

Layout Sketches & Grid Selection

Below are the sketches I developed to plan out the spreads. I needed to include the products, of course, as well as, size charts, press coverage, table of contents, return policy, and a blurb about the company and founder.

I landed on a 4x5 modular and 12 point baseline grid with 0.5” margins and a 1” footer. I knew most of my sourced photos were vertical rectangle shapes, so the 4x5 modular grid created vertical rectangle shapes that were perfect for the photos.
